A Hand I Didn’t Want to Let Go Of

The world on that metro platform had shrunk until it was only the size of our joined hands. My fingers were still stiff and cold from the hours spent traveling, but as she held on, a slow, creeping warmth began to bridge the gap between us. We started walking toward the exit, our pace slow and perfectly in sync. Neither of us spoke, the air between us was heavy with brand-new reality we had stepped into only two days ago. I knew she could feel the slight tremor in my grip – the silent evidence of how hard my heart was thumping – but I couldn’t bring myself to loosen my hold.

As we stepped out of the station and onto the sidewalk leading toward her apartment, I felt her hand slip. She was trying to pull away. I didn’t let go. My fingers tightened instinctively, an iron-clad lock that refused to break. She tried a second time, tugging a bit more firmly with a playful smile, but I just shook my head slightly and kept my eyes fixed forward. I had crossed states and spent a lifetime of waiting for this, I wasn’t letting go for anything. It wasn’t until we stood directly before the door of her flat that she finally broke the silence. She looked down at our joined hands and then up at my face, her eyes dancing with mischief. “You know,” she whispered, “I’d love to show you the place, but I kind of need that hand to find my keys. Unless you plan on us staying out here in the cold all night?”

I blinked, waking up from the trance I was in and gave her a sheepish grin. I slowly loosened my grip, but not before giving her palm one final, lingering squeeze. As she pushed the door open and the warmth of her home spilled out, she turned back to me. “I have to ask… that night I asked you out, why did you hang up so fast?” I followed her inside, the door closing behind us and finally shutting out the rest of the world. I looked at the floor, my voice dropping to a low murmur. “I didn’t hang up to be mean. I hung up because I actually forgot how to breathe. I needed those fifteen minutes to force my heart to stay in my chest so my voice wouldn’t shake when I told you yes.”

She laughed, but her expression softened in a way that made my chest ache. I took a moment to look around her flat. It wasn’t big, but it felt deeply lived in  warm in a way only a place shaped by one person’s routines can be. A small sofa sat against the wall, a low table placed nearby, and in front of it lay a soft mat, arranged just right so someone could sit on the floor comfortably without feeling the cold beneath. The space carried her presence everywhere – a faint trace of her perfume in the air, the quiet order of things placed with care, the unmistakable feeling of a home she had built for herself. She told me to go and freshen up while she started heating up the dinner. I headed to the bathroom, peeling off my shirt to wash away the exhaustion of the road. I was leaning over the sink, splashing cold water on my face, when the door suddenly creaked open.

I froze. She was standing right there in the doorway, her eyes wide as they landed on me. My face turned a deep, burning red instantly. I fumbled for a towel, feeling my heart hammer against my ribs. I’ve known her forever, but having her see me like this, in her private space, made me feel completely exposed. “Do you… need some help in here?” she teased, leaning against the frame with a wicked grin. I met her gaze and despite my racing heart, a spark of daring rose up in me. “If you stay there, I might actually say yes,” I murmured. Her eyes went wide, she let out a tiny gasp and the door slammed shut before I could even blink.

I took a few deep breaths, finished drying off and pulled my shirt back on. When I walked back into the main room, the smell of food was everywhere. She was standing by the stove, focused on the pans as the steam rose around her. I couldn’t help it, I just stood there for a moment, leaning against the wall, staring at her. She looked so natural there, so at home. Suddenly, she sensed me watching and turned around, catching my gaze. “Don’t just stand there staring,” she commanded with a playful tilt of her head. “Come and help me take out the plates and glasses.”

“Yes, wifey,” I whispered. It was so quiet I don’t think she even heard it, but just saying the word made my heart skip. I moved to the cupboard, grabbing the glasses and plates. We took the food over to the low table. We sat down together on the floor, the thick mat cushioning us. It wasn’t cold at all, I realized she must have placed the mat there specifically so we could eat comfortably on the floor without feeling the chill of the tiles. It was such a small, thoughtful detail, but it made me realize just how much she had been planning for my arrival.

– Part 3
Neither of them knew it yet, but this moment would last longer than the visit.
